Chapter 22
Home again
"Mum! Dad!" she exclaimed as she jumped up from the table she was sitting at and rushed to greet her adoptive parents.
Some strong hugs followed before her father held her at arm's length and gave her a quick look up and down.
"You've grown, Taroniah." he observed.
"She has, hasn't she." her mother concurred.
Taroniah just shook her head. She didn't think she had grown that much physically, although she had certainly grown magically. Then she realized that she didn't have to look up to her mother, but rather their eyes were about level. Oh! Maybe she had grown.
"The room I am in is paid for till tomorrow, so I figured you weren't turning up until then."
"No, we always planned to reach Marsea today, although we have made slightly better time than I anticipated. I didn't think we would get here till later in the afternoon. We'll spend the night here and then head home in the morning if that is okay with our magical daughter?"
"Of course, father. I'm just happy to see you both again. I've made a few friends at the Academy, but they're simply not the same as family."
She smiled at her adoptive parents, and they not only smiled back, but the three of them proceeded to have another round of hugs to celebrate being reunited. Her parents ordered food as well, and they spent a good part of the afternoon sitting at the table in the bar catching up on each other's activities. Taroniah and her mother went shopping in the afternoon, not that they'd bought much, but there were a few things Taroniah needed, and after her mother looked fondly at a dress displayed in a shop's window, Taroniah chose to use some of her accumulated allowance money to purchase it despite her mother's protests. The family had dinner in the public bar that evening, and there must've been a few people there who had been present the previous night given the wary looks they gave her. However, there was no trouble this night, and her parents had found a room at the tavern as well, although it was up the hall from Taroniah's.
They departed the tavern at first light, reacquired the family's cart and horse from the livery stable it had been boarded at, and soon headed out of the city. The trip home was just as tedious as she had imagined it would be, although it did give her a chance to catch up on the local news, who was doing what and with whom, and so on. Things were going well with the farm, apparently.
Once the exchange of news had worn itself out, and the conversation died down, she found herself thinking about ways of speeding up the trip home. There were
